🌟 Such excellent presentations today at our PD Day! Thank you to all our PPF members who presented:🤗 Dr Jennifer De Paola unpacked the world happiness rankings and explained why Finland might be at the top for so many years. We ranked ourselves and found out that we are as happy as Belgium 😆🖼 Katarina Mononen guided us through Guided Affective Imagery therapy, with three fascinating case studies.🧸 Liya Merzon brought us the latest in VR methods for assessing ADHD in children, with impressive results🐧Dr Gudrun Kober spoke about Embodied Psychotherapy and how to bring in awareness of the physical self to healing in the psychotherapy process✨️ András Rátonyi outlined IFS (Internal Family Systems) therapy to us, reminding us that there are NO BAD PARTS💐 Thank you again for your wonderful presentations, and thank you to everyone who came from across Finland to attend the day@psych_practitioners_fin_ry

⬆️ PPF ry panel discussion about the developments in mental health services in Finland in general and for immigrants especially.🙏 Thank you Dr Saija-Liisa Kankaanpää, Dr Hatty Francis-Ehnholm, Mira Laitinen and Dr David Araneda for participating as experts in this panel discussion💡Highlights from the discussion included:- the need for mental health professionals to sometimes help clients navigate stressful, new aspects of life in Finland, such as how to read Wilma messages (school communication app)- the difficulty for newly-graduated psychologists to work in schools in challenging but important roles, but being largely unappreciated for their work.- the challenges for health professionals working in the system when changes in the system are so rapid (such as new procedures introduced, recent closure of transcultural psychiatric centre)- the need for more cultural sensitivity training for psychologists and other health professionals. Currently only the University of Eastern Finland has compulsory cultural sensitivity training for 8 hours within their psychologist degree.A special thank you to @psv_ry for your support ❤️

PPF ry member @harshwardhansaini recently competed in the Moniheli elevator pitch competition at the Integration 2024 event in Turku.He spoke about our English language psychotherapy education program and the need for more linguistically diverse psychotherapists in Finland.After the votes were counted, he came 2nd in the whole competition. Congratulations Harshwadhan! 👏👏👏Thank you @moniheli for organising the event!

Why is International Mens Day important? Because, statistically:
♂️men have a suicide rate 3 times higher than women
♂️1 in 3 men have been the victims of domestic violence
♂️men on average die 4-5 years before women
♂️men are nearly twice as likely to suffer from lung cancer than women
♂️men are nearly twice as likely to suffer from heart disease than womenWe also acknowledge the lived experiences of folks who identify as a man and who exist outside the gender binary. András Rátonyi is a Level 3 trained, certified Internal Family Systems (IFS) practitioner. He is the founder and president of the Finnish IFS Association (Sisäisen perheen systeemiterapia yhdistys ry - SIPSY), the president of the Hungarian IFS Association, and a member on the interim board of the IFS Nordics Federation which is an umbrella organization comprising Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland with the mission of advancing IFS therapy in Northern Europe. András serves as a staff member in Level 1 and Level 2 IFS training programs in North America and Europe on a regular basis.

András' presentation will be on the Internal Family Systems (IFS). IFS is a powerfully transformative, evidence-based model of psychotherapy. We believe the mind is naturally multiple and that is a good thing. Our inner parts contain valuable qualities and our core Self knows how to heal, allowing us to become integrated and whole. In IFS all parts are welcome.

Meet presenter Gudrun Kober; for our upcoming #PDDay! 🌊🧠🌊 Link to register in our bio!

Like many Namibians Gudrun went abroad for tertiary studies, obtaining a Masters degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Johannesburg and a PhD from the University of South Africa.
She has taught psychology at the University of Namibia, been the Director of a Namibian NGO called P.E.A.C.E., held a position as psychologist in a psychosomatic clinic in Germany and worked in private practice, both in Namibia and in Finland with individuals and couples. Gudrun’s interest in embodied psychotherapy started during her Masters studies; her thesis focused on dance-movement therapy. In 2009 she moved to Germany to embark on a three-year training in dance-and-expressive therapy. She keeps being fascinated by what can arise in therapy, particularly in a group setting, when the lived body and expressive methods like drawing are invited into the process.

In her presentation, Gudrun will explore some developments in psychotherapy, including dance-and expressive therapy, that pay respect to the body as a vitally important source of emotions, meaning and healing. Paying attention to the body as a living, sensing and energizing resource serves to enrich primarily verbally based psychotherapeutic approaches. She will also use case studies from her work to illustrate what this looks like in clinical practice.

Katerina Mononen is a psychologist licensed by Valvira in Finland. This autumn, she is celebrating the 10th anniversary of her private practice, which she established in 2014. Over the past decade, Katerina has provided psychological therapy and counseling for adults in Helsinki, offering services in three languages: English, Finnish, and Czech.

Katerina will present an Introduction to Guided Affective Imagery Guided Affective Imagery (GAI), also known as Katathym Imaginative Psychotherapy. It is a form of psychotherapy that uses guided imagery to explore a client’s unconscious emotions and thoughts. During a session, the therapist guides the client to visualize specific images or scenes while in a relaxed state. These images often reveal deeper emotional conflicts, allowing the therapist and client to work through them. GAI is used to help individuals understand and resolve emotional issues by tapping into the symbolic power of the imagination.

Jennifer De Paola is an internationally trained and educated practitioner with her Bachelor’s & Master’s degree in clinical psychology from Sapienza University, Rome, Italy and her PhD in social psychology from the University of Helsinki. She is currently employed as a post-doc researcher at the Faculty of Social Sciences at University of Helsinki, as well as offering therapy at Compass Psychology.

Jennifer's presentation will be centered on the topic of happiness, and what that means to Finland and the rest of the world. Is Finland the happiest country in the world? What does it mean to be the happiest country in the world? And what are lay people’s understanding of the World Happiness Report and of happiness measurements/constructs in (positive) psychology, and how we can use that understanding as part of caring for our clients.

Workplaces can be a significant source of stress for immigrants, and here at PPF ry one of the things we do is help immigrants find a therapist who can support them by building and developing authentic and sustainable self-care skills to help relieve some of the stressors that come with being an immigrant in the Finnish workplace.
The majority of our members are immigrants, and work to care for their clients from a place of mutual understanding and shared lived experience.

I made a visit to see Tariq at SAMHA ry in Itäkes

I made a visit to see Tariq at SAMHA ry in Itäkeskus yesterday for the first time. SAMHA ry are a migrant led mental health association working directly with the communities of Eastern Helsinki.When I arrived, I saw a huge queue around the block for the weekly food aid.Inside staff got prepared for giving away the food, working together quickly and professionally. Here is Lubna, the social media person for SAMHA ry, standing by boxes she has just helped packed.While I spoke to Tariq Omar, the head of SAMHA ry, the food aid was collected and disappeared in 5 minutes flat. It is just astounding that there is such need in Finland for help like this. And this also shows the important, on-the-ground work that SAMHA ry do.Tariq and I spoke about future plans to bring together the multi-lingual PPF member professionals and migrants in need of mental health help. We are hoping to find a way to get PPF members gain experience and work, while providing services to those who need it most.

On UN World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, Psychological Practitioners Finland are excited to announce the release of a powerful series of podcasts exploring the theme of “Loneliness and Migrant Mental Health in Finland” The podcasts are a result of a network initiative with @mieli_without_borders and @fenix_finland organised and sponsored by @moniheli . The podcast contributions by PPFry explore loneliness in migrant psychologists and psychotherapists, the people often tasked with supporting and helping other migrants with their own loneliness and mental health issues. Together the podcasts illustrate some compelling themes around migration to Finland, including loneliness, belonging, healthy integration and what this involves, professional recognition and finding meaningful work. This week PPF ry member Harshwadhan Saini visited European Parliament in Brussels to lobby for migrant mental health and greater access to training for practitioners.Harsh attended as part of a @mirsal.ry group excursion to visit the European Parliament in Brussells as a young lobbyist & activist.He spoke to Finnish MEP Silvia Mödig and to Deputy Head of Civit Justice in the EU Commission Pia Lindholm about the Psycholotherapy Education Project of PPF ry.We are coordinating with trainers and a Finnish university to run English language psychotherapy training in Finland in 2025. Today two of our board members attended the annual Paloma round table event hoasted by Mieli ry. THL’s Paloma is a centre for expertise in refugee mental health. At the annual round table event, stake-holders and NGOs who work with refugees in Finland gather to share ideas and expertise.
